How to Open PDFs in PDF Engineer Instead of Google Chrome on Windows
Chrome can preview a PDF link even when PDF Engineer already handles your saved files. For drawing reviews, configure both the Windows file association and Chrome’s web-PDF behavior.

The short answer
Choose PDF Engineer as the Windows default for .pdf files, then select Download PDFs in Chrome’s PDF document settings. Open the saved download in PDF Engineer.
These instructions are for Windows PCs. Start with Windows 11; the File Explorer method below also covers Windows 10. Browser and app labels can vary by version.
Set PDF Engineer as the default PDF app in Windows
Install PDF Engineer for Windows first, then set its PDF association:
- Press Windows + I and open Apps > Default apps.
- On Windows 11, search for .pdf in the file-type search box and select the current app.
- Choose PDF Engineer and confirm with Set default or the confirmation button shown.
Alternatively, right-click a saved PDF in File Explorer, select Open with > Choose another app, pick PDF Engineer, and choose Always. On Windows 10, check Always use this app to open .pdf files, then select OK.
For more detail, see the Windows default PDF app guide. Changing the association leaves the contents of your drawings intact.
Tell Chrome to download PDFs
Change how Chrome handles PDF links from websites:
- Enter chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments in Chrome’s address bar and press Enter.
- Select Download PDFs under the default behavior options.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > PDF documents to find the same choice.
This changes PDF links to downloads; it does not by itself promise that PDF Engineer will launch automatically.
Open the downloaded drawing in PDF Engineer
Download a PDF, then open Chrome’s Downloads list with Ctrl + J. Click the completed file, or use Show in folder and double-click it in File Explorer. With the Windows .pdf association set, the saved document should open in PDF Engineer.
For a single document, you can also save a direct PDF link using Save link as. If the document is already displayed in Chrome, use the PDF viewer’s download button and open the saved copy.
If Chrome sends the file to Adobe Acrobat
Check chrome://extensions for an enabled Adobe Acrobat extension. Also follow the Acrobat guide below if the desktop Acrobat app starts immediately after downloading. Its download integration needs a separate check.
If downloads launch before you want them to, right-click a recent downloaded PDF and clear the checked automatic-open option. You can then open each drawing when you are ready to review it.
Check both ways of opening a PDF
Double-click a local drawing first. Then click a fresh PDF link in Chrome, complete the download, and open the saved file. These tests distinguish the Windows default from the browser preview setting.
If a supplier portal still shows a preview, use its Download or Export PDF control. A website’s embedded document viewer can behave differently from a direct PDF link. Confirm you downloaded the actual drawing rather than saving the surrounding web page.
Frequently asked questions
Will changing my default browser fix PDF opening?
Choose the .pdf file association in Windows and the PDF setting inside Chrome. You can keep Chrome as your browser.
Does Download PDFs automatically launch PDF Engineer?
The setting controls downloading instead of previewing. Open the completed file to launch the Windows default PDF app; automatic opening is a separate preference.
What if PDF Engineer is missing from the app list?
Confirm installation, open PDF Engineer once, and try Open with on a saved PDF again. On a managed computer, ask IT if app installation or default associations are restricted.
