How to Open PDFs in PDF Engineer Instead of Microsoft Edge on Windows

Edge can be both your web browser and the app assigned to PDF files in Windows. Changing one setting may leave the other route active, so start with the saved-file default and then adjust web downloads.

The short answer

Set PDF Engineer as the Windows default for .pdf files, then enable Always download PDF files in Edge. Open the completed download with your default PDF app.

These instructions are for Windows PCs. Start with Windows 11; the File Explorer method below also covers Windows 10. Browser and app labels can vary by version.

Set PDF Engineer as the default PDF app in Windows

Install PDF Engineer for Windows first, then set its PDF association:

  1. Press Windows + I and open Apps > Default apps.
  2. On Windows 11, search for .pdf in the file-type search box and select the current app.
  3. Choose PDF Engineer and confirm with Set default or the confirmation button shown.

Alternatively, right-click a saved PDF in File Explorer, select Open with > Choose another app, pick PDF Engineer, and choose Always. On Windows 10, check Always use this app to open .pdf files, then select OK.

For more detail, see the Windows default PDF app guide. Changing the association leaves the contents of your drawings intact.

Change Edge’s PDF document setting

Open Edge’s PDF controls directly rather than searching through menus that may move between versions.

  1. Enter edge://settings/content/pdfDocuments in Edge’s address bar and press Enter.
  2. Turn on Always download PDF files. Older versions may call the equivalent setting Always open PDF files externally.
  3. If the address redirects or the layout differs, search Edge Settings for PDF documents and find the download option.

The intended result is a downloaded PDF you can open in PDF Engineer. A website may still ask you to choose a save location.

Adobe: Edge PDF document settings

Open the saved PDF with the Windows default app

Click a direct PDF link, finish saving the file, and open Edge’s Downloads list with Ctrl + J. Use Open file, or show the file in its folder and double-click it.

If it still opens in Edge, check the Windows .pdf default again. Microsoft’s external-PDF policy documentation explicitly notes that Edge can continue opening PDFs when Edge itself remains the default PDF reader. The browser setting and Windows association need to agree.

Microsoft: external PDF handling

If you still see an Adobe or website PDF viewer

An Adobe-branded PDF toolbar inside Edge is still a browser experience. Check whether you are looking at a tab or a separate desktop application before diagnosing the default app.

If the desktop Acrobat app launches after downloading, use the Acrobat guide below. If a browser extension handles the document, inspect edge://extensions. For a viewer built into a supplier portal, use the portal’s own download button and open the saved PDF.

If Edge’s setting is locked by your organization

On a company PC, an administrator may control PDF handling. If the download setting is locked or keeps reverting, ask IT to review Edge’s AlwaysOpenPdfExternally policy together with the Windows .pdf association.

Verify the result with two tests: double-click a local PDF, then download a new PDF from Edge and open the saved file. If both reach PDF Engineer, your desktop drawing review path is ready.

Frequently asked questions

Can Edge remain my default browser?

Yes. Set PDF Engineer as the app for .pdf files while continuing to use Edge for websites.

Why does Edge still open PDFs after I enable downloads?

Check that Windows assigns .pdf files to PDF Engineer. Also distinguish direct PDF links from embedded website viewers, and check for browser extensions or company policies.

What if PDF Engineer is missing from the app list?

Confirm installation, open PDF Engineer once, and try Open with on a saved PDF again. On a managed computer, ask IT if app installation or default associations are restricted.
